Banana Fiber Project
Project Details
Description
The Banana Fiber Project in Nawolparashi, initiated by the Rotary Club of Thamel-Kathmandu, directly supports several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by empowering economically marginalized women through employment and skill development. By utilizing banana plant waste to produce fiber, blended fabrics, and handicrafts, the project creates sustainable income opportunities while addressing poverty (SDG 1), promoting gender equality (SDG 5), and fostering decent work and economic growth (SDG 8). With 12–15 women currently benefiting from the initiative, the project demonstrates a practical model for inclusive economic development in rural Nepal. Additionally, the project contributes to sustainable industry and innovation (SDG 9) by establishing a small-scale production unit that transforms agricultural waste into valuable products. Its eco-friendly approach also aligns with responsible consumption and production (SDG 12), encouraging the use of natural, biodegradable materials. By integrating environmental sustainability with social and economic empowerment, the Banana Fiber Project serves as a replicable example of community-based development that advances multiple SDG targets in a holistic and impactful manner.
